Travel Inspired Project
I received a grant to go anywhere I desired to help inspire my final year work, I decided to travel by interrail to Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris. During the trip I discovered a deep interest in older buildings and structures and wanted to incorporate this into my work. I was drawn to the idea of impermanence; architecture relies on the idea of permanence, the certainty that a building will keep standing over time. Temporality focuses on the gap between the impermanent present and uncertain future.
I learnt using pencil and charcoal primarily to draw is the most suitable material as it is has impermanent properties. It can be erased and built upon, forming layers. The partially erased layers emerge, and it reveals the history of the image. The ghostly impression of the pencil encompasses the idea of impermanence successfully.
