Residual, Dominant, Emergent

Residual, Dominant, Emergent is the title of the 3 pieces that I displayed in my undergraduate degree show in the form of animation. The Residual is based on buildings of my past and my memories. Dominant being my present and places I currently occupy. Emergent is my speculative future; its white on black. Like a chalkboard, it is used to work something out. Architects draw up architectural plans with chalk. The animations are not perfect, but I’m not an animator. It is merely a tool to emphasise the time element in the work. The focus is the drawing and layering process. It is not a typical method of making an animation and by making the animation vertically it creates a window into the space. I explored Raymond Williams’ framework which explains how the past, present and future informs our lives and asks the questions such as, what are we doing? and where are we going?  The residual focuses on history, memory and how we got to where we are today. Dominant is the present, it is categorized by trends, globalization and who we are today. Emergent speculates the future, the ideologies, technology and the Anthropocene.
