Journeys of the Imagination
This project was a response from a study trip to Berlin. I collected photographs from my trip and a building in particular grabbed my attention; The building is situated in east berlin and is an old apartment which was used as a squat. The structure is covered with graffiti, protest banners and political messages. I was drawn immediately by the colours, energy and visibility of the layers of history and subversive culture. The etching I made was the basis for most of the other work in the project. I collaged copies of it, trying to reproduce the visible layering of the historical place. I experimented with different materials and processes, such as plaster, oil, clay and various materials. I realised through trying out different materials that I was drawn towards charcoal and mark making. Drawing allowed me to translate my thoughts most appropriately.
